A Capoeira, uma arte marcial de origem africana, tem registros da sua prática no Brasil desde o século XVIII no Rio de Janeiro , Salvador e Recife . Devido ao crescimento das cidades, mais escravos foram trazidos para os centros urbanos e o aumento da vida social nas cidades tornou a capoeira mais proeminente e permitiu que ela fosse ensinada e praticada entre mais pessoas. Como a capoeira era frequentemente usada contra a polícia, o governo tentou suprimir a arte marcial e estabeleceu punições físicas severas para sua prática deste 1821, porém a arte marcial africana ganhou adeptos entre a elite brasileira e imigrantes portugueses . Os grupos de capoeiristas se juntavam em “Maltas”. Os capoeiras primavam pela notoriedade o que é confirmado pelas fontes jornalísticas. Na segunda metade do século XIX, as relações entre o mundo militar e o universo da capoeiragem se intensificaram. Desde a década de 1850, a presença de capoeiras nas corporações militares era um fato dado, a Guarda Nacional tornara-se um refúgio natural dos capoeiristas. Por ocasião da Guerra do Paraguai e no pós-1870 tem-se uma forte presença de capoeiras no exército. Na Capital do Brasil Império, os Nagoas e os Guaiamuns foram os dois maiores grupos de capoeiras que dominavam o cenário urbano do Rio de Janeiro a partir da segunda metade do século XIX. Os Nagoas e os Guaiamuns como se identificavam, eram maltas rivais que brigavam pelo espaço e o destaque na sociedade carioca. Os Nagoas como o próprio nome remete a Nagô, era formada somente por escravos africanos onde era proibido a entrada de negros nascidos no Brasil, mestiços ou brancos. A violência das maltas foi apoiada por grupos e membros dos partidos Conservador e Liberal, que se utilizavam das mesmas como milícias armadas para assassinar inimigos pessoais e desafetos políticos. Os Nagóas eram protegidos por membros do Partido Conservador, que recrutavam estes bandos para invadir residências, lojas comerciais ou jornais rivais. Já os Guaiamús eram apoiados pelos liberais e depois escolhidos como guardas costas de políticos contra as ameaças de membros do Partido Conservador. O fortalecimento do Partido Republicano levou o gabinete de João Alfredo de Oliveira (Partido Conservador) a dar apoio direto as maltas de capoeiras da região da Lapa e Santana, que formariam a temida Guarda Negra. Ela foi reunida por José do Patrocínio, em 25 de setembro de 1888, na redação do jornal Cidade do Rio, como um grupo de proteção a Monarquia diante dos exaltados discursos de republicanos nos comícios ao redor da cidade. Após o golpe militar de 15 de novembro de 1889 inicia-se uma repressão sistemática aos capoeiras, comandada por Sampaio Ferraz. No entanto, ele não conseguiu acabar com o ‘capanguismo político” na cidade do Rio de Janeiro.
